Voice AI for Law Firms: The Good, the Bad & the Ugly

By AL Simpson, Co-Founder & CEO of BrightVoice

In October 2025, I left my role as COO of an 80+ person law firm to become the full-time co-founder and CEO of BrightVoice.

As we approach the one-year anniversary, I decided to write the book I wish every law firm operator had before they bought, deployed, or gave Voice AI another chance.

Voice AI: The Good, the Bad & the Ugly will be available on Amazon in the next few weeks for $19.95.

This is not a pitch book

If it were, there would be no “Ugly.”

This is my honest account of what we learned during our first year building and deploying Voice AI at scale for law firms. It is a working guidebook for any law firm COO—or a gift from a firm’s founder/CEO to their Integrator.

My perspective comes from more than 25 years in legal services and technology. Most recently I served as COO of an 80+ person law firm. Before that I built two legal technology brand-protection companies that were successfully acquired after serving the who’s-who of the world’s largest corporations across the USA, Europe, and Asia.

Why I wrote it

I’m reading and hearing way too much hype—and far too much nonsense—about how easy Voice AI is.

Yes, almost any kid in a basement can create a Voice AI agent, give it a cute name, and have it start answering calls. That’s a single-agent answering machine on steroids.

Building enterprise Voice AI that can handle thousands of calls every week across multiple law firms is something entirely different. And it is not for the faint of heart.

The reality on the ground

Every firm has its own scripts, qualification criteria, practice areas, intake questions, transfer rules, and referral relationships. It is not one-size-fits-all.

But real callers do not follow scripts.

They mumble.
They interrupt.
They become angry, confused, and upset.
They take conversations in directions you never anticipated.

What happens when something that worked perfectly for months suddenly breaks?
How do you prevent a Voice AI agent from committing UPL?
What happens when a live transfer is not completed?
Who is listening to the calls and identifying problems?

Building Voice AI at scale takes experienced senior engineers, enterprise infrastructure, and people who truly understand how law firms operate.

This guide is for you if:

  • You are considering deploying Voice AI in your law firm

  • You are already using Voice AI but are not happy with the results

  • You tried Voice AI before and the deployment failed

  • You are trying to separate real operational capability from AI hype

This is not 50 pages telling you how wonderful AI is.
It is the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly of Voice AI in law—straight from the first year of building and deploying it at scale.
